Be a Star

Boy, it's a good thing I love Cub Scouts! Stake Day Camp for 75 boys took so much planning, coordination, making assignments, etc. But look at the fun we had!

I am so appreciative of ALL the individuals who stepped up and did their part to make it all work out. Especially I am grateful to my sweet husband and teenage boys who supported me and helped out all day long. Jeremy came up with a great gathering activity: frisbee dodgeball, which was a huge hit!

President Bluth was gracious in accepting the opportunity to speak to the boys. Our theme for the day was "Be a STAR." Each boy is the star of his own life and does SOMETHING really well, like sports, the arts, making friends, or excelling in a school subject. We wanted them to try out some new skills and pass off lots of scout requirements.

Brother Schenck from the Lakeside ward did a great job helping the boys earn their kickball belt loop.

They LOVED it. And Isaac jumped right in, too.

One class the boys rotated through had them learning all about music. They made kazoos and learned to play them...

...sang some fun songs, and learned to conduct music, too!

Maybe the favorite activity was the service project. The boys participated in a "car wash" of the chairs throughout the building. They had a great time scrubbing those chairs and getting each other wet. Brother Abaroa wouldn't let any of them stay dry!

Noah helped me out at this station, making sure the lemonade stayed filled and handing out frozen yogurts. (And though you don't see Spencer in the photos, it was because he was the official photographer and took most of these great shots.)

More water games made sure the boys got good and soaked.

The art rotation was really cool. Sister Skousen is an amazing artist and came to share her talents with the boys.

They were able to make play dough sculptures...

...paint scenery for the stage show...

...and make silhouettes of each other (also for the scenery).

After lunch, the scouts separated by rank to prepare talents for the Cub Scout Show that afternoon. The Wolves worked on costumes and practiced some pretty funny skits.

The Webelos worked on puppetry, making sock puppets and coming up with scenarios for the show.

The Bears loved learning awesome rope tricks...

...and magic tricks to perform.

Finally the time came! Parents and friends were invited to come see the show and gathered in the gym as the boys made their final preparations.

The show opened with all the boys playing a song on their kazoos. Fun!

Brother Eyring, faithful high councilor, ran the ancient but still functioning spotlight.

The skits were great, but long.

But see how cool the scenery turned out!

The rope and magic tricks were neat to watch.

As part of the gathering activity, the Wolves made paper-bag masks...

...the Bears made animal masks...

...and the Webelos made paper bag puppets. They all got up and sang a song and showed off their handiwork.

Finally, the Webelos performed their super ten-year-old-humor-infused puppet shows, and we were done!

Hooray! Lots of work involved but it was a GREAT day. Love these gals who go along with my crazy ideas. MaryAnn and Niki, you rock!

Oh, and you ROCK, too, honey! Check him out, faithful to the very end. I am so blessed.
